Mistakes to Avoid During a Renovation

Home remodeling projects can take a bite out of your budget and your time, especially if they’re not done properly. Here are a few common mistakes to avoid during your renovation project (and to help keep your sanity 😜).

1.) Rushing into the Project

Thoughtfully planning allows your projects to run smoothly and eliminates the risk of problems coming up later.

2.) Choosing the Cheapest Contractor

The lowest cost never equals the best quality. Take your time and interview multiple contractors to find the right fit.

3.) Setting an Unrealistic Budget

You'll need wiggle room for unforeseeable issues, which unfortunately, happens on every project. Plan a budget plus 15-25% to cover yourself.

4. Being Indecisive or Changing Your Mind Often

It can slow down the project and will more often than not, add cost to the bottom line.

5. Sacrificing Function for Form

Appearances shouldn’t be your only goal. Think about what you need out of your home and how you’ll live and use the space.

6.) Not Thinking Long Term

Don’t just think about how you want your home now. Think about 5, 10 or even 20 years down the road.

7.) Overbuilding

Putting too much into your home can outprice your neighborhood.  Do your renovation properly and you’ll have a return on your investment.

8.) Having Unrealistic Expectations

Renovations take time. Plus construction is messy, noisy and inconvenient. It’s just the nature of the beast. Set yourself up for success and get in the right mindset (patience included 😉). It will be worth it.

9.) Not Consulting the Pros

So many of these mistakes can be minimized (even completely avoided) by working with professionals. It will ultimately save you time, stress and mistakes. Who doesn’t want that?!
