Creating an outdoor space is a clever way to extend your living space. Think of it as another room in the house: somewhere where you can cozy up, kick up your feet, and relax with the company of a good book or a group of friends, but with the added perk of fresh air and sunshine.

Summer will be here before we know it so let’s make the most of it! Read on for tips on how to create your own outdoor living space and take advantage of the warm months to come.

1.     Start with a Rug

Whether its colorful or neutral, a rug is the grounding element that sets the tone for your outdoor space. It also gives a softness that really makes it feel like a destination for relaxation.

Outdoor rugs are made with different fibers to their indoor counterparts, so they’re surprisingly durable and easy to keep clean.

2.     Bring in the Furniture

Think about how you’re going to use the space. Is it gathering with friends and family around a meal? Maybe its soaking up the sun while reading a book. Or lounging under the stars near a warm fire. Maybe it’s all the above.

Whatever you’re after, prioritize the functions you want and plan out how you’ll use your space. If you have a large patio, divide your outdoor area into zones for various activities. If you have a smaller balcony, consider combining your living and dining into one multi-use space.

3.     Make it Comfortable and Inviting

Outdoor furniture is built to withstand the elements and is consequently, very utilitarian. Add in outdoor cushions and throw pillows that will soften your space and make it a comfortable place where people really want to spend time. Keep blankets handy for those colder evenings too.

And don’t forget about the sun! Incorporate an umbrella, sun shade or even a pergola to protect your space from the hottest parts of the day, so you can linger outside happily for hours.

4.     Incorporate Pattern

Furnish and accessorize as you would indoors with various colors, patterns and textures. Layering in various types of pattern in different sizes will add interest and character, keeping your space from feeling flat.

You can accentuate the landscape around you with natural elements and earth tones or make it pop with bright and inviting colors.

5.     Illuminate the Space

Highlight the outdoor areas you’ll be using most with light. Think string lights, lanterns, solar lights, LED-based candles, etc. Lighting not only sets the mood, adding ambiance to your outdoor space; it allows you to keep entertaining after the sun goes down!
